What is Rat-Club?

Journal Entry: Sun Jan 13, 2008, 11:34 AM
The Founding of [=rat-club]

There were no active clubs when I founded [=rat-club]. Sure, there were a few on dA, but they were either neglecting their updates, or they weren't updating at all. I started this club out of the sheer love for these animals, and the want to give something back for all the help and advice I've received over the years. Now we are the largest and quickest-growing rat club on deviantART, and I am damn proud to say it. We have tons of activities, and run contests every other month. If you're ready to join a club that will give everything it can for you, then all you have to do is join us. Enjoy your stay - and remember, no matter what it is, you are always welcome to drop in your suggestions with us!

Tracy
[=Sekushi], founder
and the rest of the [=rat-club] staff.

What is [=rat-club]?

:bulletred: [=rat-club] is a place where lovers of rats can unite and share their love for these wonderful creatures.
:bulletred: [=rat-club] is a positive community that only supports positive actions from its members and watchers.
:bulletred: [=rat-club] is dedicated to exposing artists' work and helping its members gain further recognition on deviantART.
:bulletred: [=rat-club] is absolutely dedicated to helping answer any questions you have about your rats, no matter what the topic!
:bulletred: [=rat-club] will spread the good word about rats!
:bulletred: [=rat-club] will provide accurate care information about rats to everyone!

What are the benefits of joining [=rat-club]?

:bulletred: Currently, we have over 90 members and over 200 watchers. This means over 200 people will be viewing your art when you submit it to the [=rat-club] gallery! By joining, you will be able to participate in our contests, our chat events, join our team competitions, and more! You could be featured in one of our future news articles!
:bulletred: By joining, you know your work is protected. All comments, :+fav:'s, and :+devwatch:'s will be directed to you, the original artist.
:bulletred: By submitting to the club often, your work gets double the exposure! Not only will it be displayed, of course, in your gallery - but in ours as well! This will direct more viewers to your page, which will better your chances of receiving more comments, favorites, deviantWATCHes, pageviews, and friends!
:bulletred: When you submit to a club contest, you have a chance at gaining the spotlight and being showcased on the front page of the club!

Is there anything I can do to help the club?

:bulletred: Submit, submit, submit!
:bulletred: If you dedicate any artwork to the club, you will gain an Honorable Mention as well!
:bulletred: Participate in the contests!
:bulletred: Mention [=rat-club] to your friends, watchers, or anyone else who may be interested in the club! (You also gain points for your team for each referral!)
:bulletred: If you have any suggestions for the club, do not hesitate to send us a [note]!
:bulletred: Keep up with the club! By being aware of what is going on in the club, you can utilize the club better, and will gain more out of it. Please keep yourself informed!

Ever wondered what the people who run the club are like? Well, here's your chance to get to know them a little more personally!

Our Founder, =Sekushi

Tracy Aardsma

Me and Rats:
I got my first rat in high school from a science teacher. His name was Kryczyk, and he was the greatest rat I have owned to date. (Ne'Roldair, one of my current boys, is a very close second.) I also got a rat named Hammer from her later that year. The two boys were like brothers until Kryczyk died. Hammer followed not too long after - and moped every day after Kryczyk's death. It was then that I knew exactly what type of animal I was dealing with, and was sucked into their world forever.

I started breeding out of curiosity; keeping the babies for myself or rehoming them to friends and family. I was curious about genetics; being the science geek that I am, I felt I could never learn enough about it. I soon learned rat genetic patterns and was able to produce plenty of litters over the years that were quite an improvement. Over the years I have probably owned early 40 adults, and bred/rehomed twice as many babies. Amazingly, I've had nothing but good luck with my rats - no major illnesses, no tumors, only a few breakouts of mites, and only one rat who had severe respiratory problems. All the rest were healthy and happy for the entirety of their lives.

But I am certainly hooked on rats. They have replaced dogs as my all-time favorite pet. I still love dogs, but I'll never feel the same about them again after spending the past eight years with rats. This club allows me to share the love I have for these animals with others, and to meet others who think the same way as I do. I am proud to say that I have the only active rat club on dA, and certainly the largest one that's ever been here!
I currently have eight rats - Ne'Roldair, Jeremy, House, Foreman, Wilson, Mikey, Fat Boy, and Drum. Six are rescue rats adopted from Ashley and Sarah of Chicago Rat Pack (fantastic people, btw); which would be the last six listed. All are loves, and brilliant little personalities! XD I also have four mice - Sessil, Dog, Tweak, and the last one hasn't caught on a name quite yet. All are females.

Other Hobbies:
Art, obviously. That's why I'm on dA. I write my novel about my fantasy world, Lifthrasir, and I like to do drawings of my original characters. I'll soon be investing in a Wacom for digital rendering. My newly found obsession is photography. I also am quite fond of origami, which I would probably consider my 3rd favorite form of art. But that's not all I do. I make scrapbooks, cross-stitch, knit, woodworking, and pretty much whatever someone asks me to do for them.

Aside from art, I am a gear-head and absolutely cannot get enough of working on cars. I love working with my hands and mechanics comes naturally to me.

I'm a video game geek and will play games for HOURS on end. Especially Diablo II. I used to be obsessed with Lineage, and everyone there still knows me as my original princess, Lorridde (some know me as Goddess, as well...a mage I played). I love Oblivion...that game is just fantastic. My best character in that game was a mage. <3

I'm also currently obsessed with Guitar Hero 3 and Halo 3. I play on XBox live so if you're gaming, send me a note and we can trade account names.

More:
:bulletred: Other than my rats, I have a cat named Wasabi and a Betta named Larry Fish. When we can, I will be getting a Chinese Crested.
:bulletred: My favorite color is green.
:bulletred: I have an obsession with Chai tea.
:bulletred: I play a LOT of DDR.
:bulletred: I also have an obsession with Diablo II, Oblivion, Dynasty Warriors, The Sims, and Halo ()
:bulletred: I love riding horses.
:bulletred: I have quite a few body piercings, but no tattoos. (Yet.)
:bulletred: I used to have a tarantula (I'll get another soon), Jackson chameleons, and a blue-tongued skink, along with just about every small animal you can own.
:bulletred: I would someday like to speak fluent German.
:bulletred: I wear shoes that make me look taller than the 5'2" that I am without them.
:bulletred: I once let my ex shoot me with a paintbull gun at point-blank range. Twice. In the back. DX
:bulletred: I have never ridden a motorcycle...and am quite ashamed to say it.
:bulletred: I grew up in Virginia Beach, VA.
:bulletred: I enjoy road trips, especially if I'm driving and the trip is at least 12 hours long.
:bulletred: I have lived in 6 states, but have moved multiple times around 4 of them.
:bulletred: I have been obsessed with Johnny Depp since before I knew what an obsession was.
:bulletred: I am quite known for saying the most random things at the most random times.

Our Admin, =Calypso-Ash

Me and Rats:
Quatre and Cloud are actually my first rats to ever own; I've been interested in having rats ever since I was little 'cause I was the usual all-animal loving kid (excluding some insects and bugs; including spiders, creepy bugs, and bees!) but I'm O.K with those "some" bugs unless theres distance between us! Before Q&C (as I refer to them); I've had 2 hamsters (different times though), 2 guinea pigs and a rabbit; all of which led up to rats :D

Other hobbies:
I'm a huge Ultima Online Gateway geek. I probably know more hue codes (4/5 digit numbers) and codes alone than birthdays; all of which are practically memorized -- yet, I still forget b-days if they're not written down. I quit Ultima after years (I forgot how many years exactly) but I BETA'd with my oldest brother, and played for years. Quitting after EA Games bought it and completely ruined the game...But that's another story!! Of course; one hobby includes photography! I've always wanted to be a photographer; I didn't really care what I photographed; as long as I could be a "Photographer", and I was brought into it purely by the title; it was very seductive sounding at the time. *LOL's* And actual "Other Hobbies" include sleeping, bugging people, cuddling/snuggling, eating a lot then disappearing for a day to sleep it off; and probably a lot more if I could remember XDD

More:
:bulletred: I'm pretty much obsessed with Argyle; I don't know how it happened either.
:bulletred: On UO Gateway; and Ultima Online alone, I'm a master architect and house decorator. Probably one of the bests of the bests XD (if not that; I'm still pretty damn great :P)
:bulletred: Me and Quatre have nearly matching sweaters x3 (his is a full pattern and green; mine is black with only a gray band of Argyle in the middle) very fun to take him in public!
:bulletred: I plan on becoming a Veterinarian :D
:bulletred: During the Autumn/Winter months; I hibernate.
:bulletred: I've got an ever growing obsession with Eiffel 65's song, "Viaggia Insieme a Me".
:bulletred: I'm the shortest person of my pack of friends T___T; the.. shortest. I'm short, btw.
:bulletred: I get excited about car rides (like a dog; I swear), and prefer my window down.
:bulletred: I can pretty much get anything out of my male friends; I have mastered the correct way to pout efficiently.
:bulletred: Regularly; while getting ready to go somewhere or anything, I talk to myself- sometimes carrying out a long conversation.
:bulletred: When I get the hiccups; I often get upset when people tell me, "Oh look Stephie you're growing!!". When, I'm clearly Not. XDD
:bulletred: I love Europe more than America.
:bulletred: My nickname, "Kookie" actually came from my utter-most popular character when I still played the online version of Ultima Online XD
:bulletred: Including my list of obsessions; # 2 is old aviary goggles. They're awesome.
:bulletred: I like saying "lol" whenever something significant happens
:bulletred: I, also have a genuine fondness for VW Beetles; they're so adorable!
:bulletred: Also! I'm a certified leg-rapist 83
:bulletred: I like to molest bottles with my tongue :paranoid:
:bulletred: When the phone rings; I never answer it. Actually; I've already turned the ringer off the "office" phone (the one thats right beside me XD)
:bulletred: I've weighed 85-95 pounds probably my whole (teen) life; and seems to be for the rest of my life as well. LOL!
:bulletred: I'm a Wine person! XDD;

Joining/Submission Rules

Sun Jan 13, 2008, 11:36 AM
:star: How to Join [~rat-club]/Rules and Policies
:bulletred: All fans of rats may join the club. It does not matter how many pageviews you have or how often you post art pertaining to rats. With that in mind, do know that the more active you are, the more you will benefit from joining us.
:bulletred: In order to be added as a member, there are three things you must do.

You will not be added to the memberlist until all three conditions have been met!
  • 1. You must [deviantWATCH] the club. :+devwatch:
  • 2. You must add the club icon to your front journal*, OR a separate club journal which is linked to your front journal**.
To do this, simply type :iconrat-club: into your journal.
  • 3. Send a [note] to the club entitled "Join."
*Note: If you do not have a subscription, you will unfortunately have to re-post the icon each time you add a journal.
**Note: Another simple solution for those who do not have a subscription. Simply make a separate journal to put all your clubs in and link it to your front journal.
**Example courtesy of ~Vaprrenon: You'll see on the journal at her front page, "Artists & Clubs", which links to another one of her journals which lists (at the bottom) all the clubs she's in.

See also: FAQ #81: How can I make links to other deviants, deviations, or websites?, for information on linking.

:star: Policies for Submitting Artwork
:bulletred: Send a [note] to the club entitled "Submission."
Do not submit deviations through comments on the front page! They will NOT be posted!

:bulletred: You may submit TWO deviations per week to the club. Contest submissions do not count as a submission. We do not accept submissions from scraps!

:star: ~rat-club Not for You Anymore?
:bulletred: If for any reason you would like to leave the club, please a [note] and you will be removed from the memberlist.

:star: Joining
#1: Can I join the club?
Of course you can. You just need to follow the [Joining/Submission Rules] correctly before sending your note.

#2: I don't own any rats; can I still join?
See #1.

#3: I am a mouse lover, and do not own rats; can I still join?
See #1.

#4: I own both rats and mice; can I still join?
See #1. Seriously.

#5: I do not want to watch the club; can I still join?
NO. Would you really expect us to let you benefit from our almost 200 watchers if you're not even willing to look at the work of others in this club? Every other member in this club will see your work, and possibly comment or favorite your work. You're not willing to give the same in return? You absolutely may not join if you do not wish to watch the club. It is unfair to the rest of the members.

#6: I do not want to display the icon in my journal for XYZ reason; can I still join?
Again, NO. There are few requirements I have of the members of this club, and they are simple. Remember that I do not get paid to run this club for you, I am doing it for free because of my love for rats and because of my desire for a rat-based community on dA that actually stays active. My admins likewise do not get paid for the time they take to assist you with submissions and questions. By advertising our icon, you are bringing more people to the club, which means more people will see your work, refer others, and keep bringing more and more to this club. Basically, by refusing the icon, you are telling us that we are supposed to do all this work on the club to benefit you, and you can't take a few seconds to add that icon into your journal. Don't send us your pity stories or pleas. There are no exceptions.

#7: Can I post the icon in a separate entry with my other club icons?
Yes.

#8: I do not have a subscription, so I cannot post the icon.
Now this is a flat-out lie and don't think it hasn't been tried on me before. I went a long time without a subscription, and the only restriction you have on icons is the number of icons you can display in your journal. I do not accept having "~rat-club" as a link in your journal, it must be the icon. It is how we are recognized. See #6 for further reasons why this icon is important.

#9: Your rules suck. (Don't think I haven't heard it.)
With your attitude, and the fact that you can't even read the reasons behind the rules, I wouldn't want you in the club anyway.

#10: I'll make a deal with you. I offer THIS and THAT for the club, and in return I don't want to follow the rules. (I have absolutely heard this one before! NOT kidding!)
There's a word for this type of note - and that is: DELETED!

:star: Submitting to the Gallery
#1: How do I submit work to the gallery?
Either send us the URL of the deviation page straight from the field in your browser, or submit your thumbnail code in a note to the club. (This can be found on your deviation page, next to the description.) Please do not send us to the link where the image is loaded from on dA - we will have to go through your gallery to find the deviation page and may have to ask you to submit the link again properly. As a result, posting of your work may be delayed.

#2: Can I submit a work from my scraps to the gallery?
No - I'm not sure why it would be in your scraps if you want to show it off so badly. We do not accept scraps submissions for our gallery. If during one of our "gallery checkups," we find that one of your submissions has been moved to your scraps, it will be deleted from our gallery.

#3: Do you take the credit for the deviation?
Absolutely not! Not only do we tag all submissions with our "Do not fav here" line, we also provide links directly to your deviation and to your page in each description.

#4: Why are comments disabled on all deviations in the gallery?
Again, this is so that all comments are directed toward the original artist, not us. This is the benefit of the club - we do the work, you reap the reward!

#5: Is there a limit to how many deviations I can submit?
Yes. Currently, there is a limit of two deviations per week. This may or may not change.

#6: When does the week start and end for the club?
Our weeks run Sunday-Saturday, so even if you don't submit your weekly deviations until Saturday, you can submit your deviations for the next week first thing the next day. On the other hand, if you submit two deviations on a Sunday, you will have to wait until the next Sunday to submit.

#7: I forgot to submit last week! Can I submit extra deviations this week?
Nope, sorry. If you forget to submit your two deviations to the gallery, they're gone.

#8: Do contest submissions count against my 2-per-week limit?
Absolutely not. If, for example, a contest has unlimited entries, you could submit your two gallery submissions and fifty contest entries. (Our contests usually have a limit of two, however, and I'm sure our admins are glad for that!)

#9: Do deviations dedicated to the club count against my 2-per-week limit?
Again, of course not! If you have made something in dedication to the club, send it our way! It will be posted on the [Honorable Mentions] page!

#10: What mediums can I submit?
Any medium you desire! Photographs are obviously the most popular, but we have other types of art in our gallery. Basically, if you can submit it to deviantART, we can submit it to our gallery.

:star: Affiliates
#1: Will you affiliate with our club?
Most likely, yes. There are very few clubs I will not associate with - animal haters of any kind, clubs based on the promotion of a negative topic, etc. If your club is anything else, we'll affiliate!

#2: What is involved in affiliation?
All we require is that our icon is posted somewhere with the rest of your affiliates, in an easily-found location in your club. You do not have to post them on your front page, but at least have a link on your front page that leads to them. I do not affiliate with clubs whose affiliates are impossible to find, because I have made it easy to find mine.

#3: What are the benefits of affiliation?
Simple! You are advertising me and in return, I am advertising you! Some of the best places to find a club are in another club's affiliate list!

#4: Excuse me, but we're supposed to be affiliates and our icon isn't in your journal.
An honest mistake. As you can see by the number of affiliates we have, I'm certainly not trying to forget anyone. Just [note] us that it was forgotten or is missing.

#5: Will you affiliate with my external rat site?
Yes, and this applies to rat-based sites only (well, okay, mice too!). Affiliation, of course, does not imply sponsorship by either of us for the other. If you want to trade banners, let me know, and let me browse your site before I agree.

:star: Contests
#1: How often are the contests held?
They are not at set intervals; they are announced almost immediately.

#2: Do you offer prizes?
We try to. We ask members to donate prizes, which usually turns out well. There are always features involved.

#3: What types of prizes are there?
This depends on the donator. They can be features, requests, submissions, prints, personalized items, or any other number of things.

#4: How long do you run your contests?
Each contest will run for a month, minimum.

#5: What is the voting period?
Regardless of contest length, voting is always one week long.

#6: How do we vote?
Voting rules are always announced at the beginning of the voting period. They can vary.

#7: How are the winners notified?
The front journal is always updated to reflect the winners, and notes are sent individually congratulating them.

#8: I don't agree with John Smith winning the Example Contest.
Alright. Nobody ever said you had to.

#9: Can I use [insert devious plot here] to sway the vote for me?
NO, NO, NO! You absolutely may not plead for votes, attempt to sway others to vote for you, or bribe anyone for a vote for any reason! You may not post "Vote for me!" in your descriptions, but you can post something like "I hope I win!"
If anyone EVER attempts to bribe your vote, please send us the evidence. If it is in a note or deviation description, SCREENSHOT it. (Do not forward notes; they are as we all know easy to forge in this way.) If it is in a comment, LINK us to the page with the comment.
Information regarding how to screenshot on your computer can be found here:
:faq102:

#10: Thank you for running this contest!
Thank you for participating!

:star:Other
#1: Are you looking for admins/helpers/etc. for the club?
We have a page which lists all of the positions and their availability. It can be found on our [Rat-Club Positions] page.

#2: Are you looking for admins/helpers/etc. for the chat?
We are always looking for helpers with the chat. If you are interested, note me.

#3: Who are the current admins/helpers/etc.?
Our founder is [~Sekushi], our club admin is [=Calypso-Ash].

#4: What are their jobs? Who do I contact for what?
No matter what your question is, you should always note the club, not our personal accounts - unless it is something you wish to discuss in private.

[~Sekushi] (currently unavailable).

[=Calypso-Ash] currently runs the club, and can answer questions about the club for you.

#5: I would like to help out.
Whatever you are interested in doing for us, note us, and we will consider.

#6: Why don't you just use the club to favorite the art?
There used to be a rule on dA regarding this, and I have confirmed with `whoatherechief that the FAQ I remember may have been changed since I last read it. It used to state that a club cannot have members' art in their gallery as well as their favorites (abuse of the favorites system). So if we were to use the club account to mark favorites, then I would have to go through those favorites each and every time a new member joins to ensure that we are not violating this policy by removing anything we had in the favorites by the new member. (You bet your ass I'm not about to get this club banned for ANY reason.) As many things in this club already take up a majority of my life (that is not a complaint), I am also not going to make it any harder for myself to maintain it. So this separate account will favorite rat art all over dA from all types of mediums.

#7: But why would you do that if you have a club dedicated to this already?
Not everyone wants to be in the club. That is fine. But some of those works are works I would absolutely love to feature - and I can't because I do not have the owners' permissions to feature them. We can only put in the gallery what we are explicitly told to put there - anything else that is put in is considered stolen. We are not art thieves. (There are, however, no rules that I have found against accounts that only use their favorites.)

:star: Have a Question We Missed?
Note us - we'll be glad to put the answer up here for you, and anyone else in the future!
