I really want a rat, and I've had quite a good bit in the past, but for some odd reason,a fter my hammie Precious died and after my sister's mouse Oreo passed away, all the rodents we've gotten weren't so... lucky, I guess you could say. D:
Precious and Oreo endured a lot, such as nearly losing an eye, and being cornered by one of our cats. (The same cat that slashed my dear hammie's eye. ;_; ) They lived very long lives, though. If I ever get a rat, I will definately join this club. :3

cowdog: A new species which is a rare hybrid of cow and dog. If you have found one of these you have either eaten a mushroom, taken illegal substances, or you're dreaming.
He seems fine when he's out of the cage or when I reach in to pick him up, but he's not liking the fingers in the bars thing still, so I'll just warn people to keep fingers out of his cage. I shouldn't have done it or let people do it in the first place I guess, I wouldn't want someone prodding me all the time either. Maybe he finally had enough, lol.
He's very lovey-dovey when he's out, ratty kisses and whatnot, so I'll definitely start keeping him out more. He loves the attention he gets. I imagine he's maybe lonely because I haven't been around as much since my accident. I'll definitely start giving him more attention now. Thanks for your help!

In order to resocialize with your ratty, I recommend taking the whole cage (if possible) and putting it somewhere where, if he wants to, he can come out and interact with you, such as a couch or bed or playpen.
Do NOT get a rat playmate until you can interact with him normally again. If they get in a fight, you don't want to be to afraid to seperate them again.
When you do get a cage mate, make sure to quarintine them before introducing them. Smear vanilla extract on their privates and the top of their heads so that they'll smell similar to each other.
Then let them play in a neutral zone that they've both played with you in.
Make sure the size of the playmate is roughly the same as the rat you already have so that they are on even ground.
If you have any other questions, or there was something I didn't cover, just ask

1. I want to buy my rat a cagemate, and I should've done so when he was younger, but he's 3 or so now and I don't know if he would adapt as well to a new friend this late in the game. My previous rats, two girls, were in the same cage, even sisters at the store I bought them from, but did not like eachother at all when I got them home and one of them even beat up on the other. I didn't think to separate them because they were siblings, but did eventually then one died. Is it too late to buy him a friend?
and..
2. I've never, EVER had any problems with my rat. I could always stick my fingers in the cage, even put my face right up against the bars with no problems. However, recently, I put my finger in the bars like I normally do, and he bit me. Hard. Hard enough to draw blood! It stung when he bit me, but afterwards it didn't as much. He didn't bite and thrash around trying to tear my finger off, but he bit and pulled back, so when I pulled back it hurt that much more. I thought maybe it was because he wanted more food, so I fed him and left. Today, I did it again after I fed him and he had his fill of food, and once again, he bit me. I had not eaten at all, so my fingers didn't smell like food to tempt him. He's never bitten anyone like this. Why would he suddenly have a change in character like that, could it be old age and he doesn't recognize me anymore?

When you get him a cagemate (same gender please) you should keep them seperate for a few weeks to make sure the new one has no diseases.
A cagemate would help your ratties be less stressed, that is very true
A favorite bonding game of skitish rats is "hide under a blanket with owner." A very simple game, sit on a couch or bed with a blanket, and just add rat. They like to borrow, and the fun safe time with you will make your rat less shy.
Just give him time, treats, and fun, he'll come around.
